Couples Communication Is Like Playing Frisbee

It takes both parties to make a game fun and keep it going. To “catch” a Frisbee, one party needs to throw the Frisbee “mindfully” at a certain angle and speed; the other party also needs to stay within a reasonable range and “actively” move in the Frisbee’s direction.

Couples communication thrives through mindful speaking and active listening, which take time and effort to master. Effective communication is an art that holds our hands together, for better or for worse, in good times and in bad.

I practice integrated cognitive behavioral couple therapy (CBCT) and emotionally focused therapy (EFT) in my work with couples.

CBCT is the most well-researched approach for assisting couples who are experiencing relationship distress . It addresses cognitions, emotions, and behaviors that are particularly important in understanding and improving relationship functioning. CBCT promotes the maintenance of an adaptive balance among couples’ needs as individuals, the couple as a unit, and how couples relate to their environments.

EFT embraces the critical role of attachment in intimate relationships, and it guides the exploration of emotion and emotional regulation in couples’ interactions, facilitating the strength of emotional bonds, which can result in stronger relationships and improved communication.

Treatment Orientations:

Cognitive Behavioral Couple Therapy (CBCT)

Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT)

Each couple is unique, and the exploration of cultural diversity within the relationship is a critical therapeutic component. Through coaching skills that have a strong research foundation (e.g., the speaker-listener technique, which facilitates effective communication), I am committed to helping couples gain insights on cognition, emotions, and behaviors and their role in the development of relationship distress, as well as cultivating a safe space where couples can process attachment-related emotions and needs.
